REPORT ON CITES MEETING, SANTIAGO, CHILE NOVEMBER 3-15, 2002 Betsy Swart, Executive Director, AERP
I was very pleased to represent the Amboseli Trust for Elephants (AERP) at the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting held November 3-15 in Santiago, Chile. Many of you have read press accounts of this meeting and its potential impact on elephants. Most media reports have been woefully incomplete; others have been completely misleading. I hope the following report will shed some light on the CITES process and on what impact the recent CITES meeting will have on the future of elephants in Africa. Click here for the article...

AERP Funds "Bees and Trees" Project

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants (AERP) is broadening its scope and has begun providing support to other projects that promote elephant and habitat conservation. To that end, we are happy to announce that we have recently given a grant to Save the Elephants for their Bees and Trees project, which will conserve vital elephant habitat in the Samburu National Reserve. AERP is proud to have underwritten the initial effort to get this important project underway.

AMBOSELI ELEPHANT RESEARCH PROJECT REPORT
September 2002
Cynthia Moss

It’s the dry season in Amboseli and the Park is full of animals. Sometimes it almost looks like a barnyard with all the elephants, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles packed in and around the swamps. This year we are experiencing a drought with below average rainfall in what should have been the “long rains” in April and May. The “short rains” are supposed to come in late October.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed. click here for the article

AMBOSELI ELEPHANT RESEARCH PROJECT REPORT
JANUARY 2002
Cynthia Moss

I feel that I have been out of touch over these last few months and so it gives me pleasure to be able to write this report to update you on my activities and those of the Project.

On December 1, I returned to Amboseli after a three-month absence.  It was the longest I had ever been away. Seeing the elephants, sleeping in my tent to the wonderful night sounds, and waking up to Kilimanjaro was just what I needed. I’ve been feeler better and better ever since.
