Oakland Zoo

2003

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S REPORT NOVEMBER, 2003
We've been very busy at AERP this fall and I want to share some of the news with you. First, thanks to all of you who responded to the "Bad Bull" crisis and our urgent plea for funds. Your prompt and generous support diffused a tense situation and saved Bad Bull's life. In September, Cynthia spent 3 ½ weeks in the U.S., during which time we worked in our Massachusetts office; held a Board of Directors meeting; met with donors and friends of AERP; and drove to Yarmouth Port for a two-day meeting with the International Fund of Animal Welfare (IFAW). ... click here for the rest of the stories and 15 photos

Carol Buckley, Asian elephant expert and co-founder of the 800-acre Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, discussed her life-long journey with elephants and the creation of a natural habit refuge specifically developed for elephants. Buckley also shared plans for the arrival of the first African Elephants to join the sanctuary. (click here for event photos
SEVP launches online Visual and Tactile Signals Database
The Savanna Elephant Vocalization Project (SEVP) in Kenya has recently launched a comprehensive database of savanna elephants' Visual and Tactile Signals on their website http://www.elephantvoices.org/ . 171 signals, expressions and gestures are listed under the headings General Context, Narrower Context, Signal Name, Code and Description. Currently some two thirds of the signals are documented with more than 300 photos. The database is the most comprehensive collection available and, over the next two years, will be followed by a similar collection of elephant vocalizations including written description, audio, photo and video documentation. Also other updates, photos and functions have been added to ElephantVoices, in SEVP's effort to fullfill the project's outreach perspectives. You can now also subscribe to ElephantVoices News through the website's news pages.

The SEVP and www.ElephantVoices.org  are initiated and executed by Joyce Poole and Petter Granli, and were started in 2002. The project is to a large extent based on Poole's research on the elephant population in Amboseli National Park over more than two decades. The SEVP will continue through 2005, and is integrated with the Amboseli Elephant Research Project (AERP). The world renown AERP celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 2002.
