No more cross border ivory sales on eBay

Online auction giant eBay has restricted the worldwide trade of elephant ivory, bowing to pressures from the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

IFAW has been strongly lobbying eBay to change its ivory sales policies. The move comes on the heels of a Convention on International Trade in Endandgered Spieces in Europe in early June which passed a motion to establish a working group to deal specifically with international Internet trade issues.

Help keep eBay on the right path

To all who may read this in Europe and US, please help keep eBay honest about their promises. In May and June a friend from the UK and I started looking up ivory, ivory tusks, ivory netsukes on eBay. There were literally thousands of items for sale - some coming directly from China. We started reporting to eBay all the questionable "illegal" items we found, and we reported hundreds. Since July 1st there has been a marked decline. However, we can't be complacent. Please, if you see what you think is an illegal ivory item, report it and see if eBay removes it. Sellers were getting by with this by stating it was "antique", "bone", "ivory-like", "mammoth bone" - which in many cases is a good way to hide that it is true ivory.

Remember, for every piece of ivory someone buys, it is just encouraging further poaching. Each and every one of us has to help "patrol" this menace.

If eBay doesn't remove the questionable items, please report it to your local wildlife societies and see if they can intervene.

Good idea

I think that's a good idea, and everybody can help.

In other cases they are quite vigilant. I just tried to auction off two old, but still valid Kenyan KSh 10 bank notes, and my auction got removed because of some idiotic regulation by the German financial watchdogs. At least this shows that they can and do patrol their auctions.

If we can get the message through to them that ivory auctions or sales are illegal, perhaps this will ultimately stick.
