how you can help/donation section
Thu, 2008-09-18 11:37 by Tegan
Hi Amboseli people,
This is my first post, so let me just say I found out about this through having just seen the last part of a documentary in Australia on ABC TV (national broadcaster) before the 7.00pm news. I've wanted to donate to an elephant trust/conservation project for awhile and so I just have.
I think it would be a really good idea to have that 'urgent wish list' that you've got at the bottom of the topic on Chinese roadworking companies poaching elephants (!!) on the 'how can I help' page. It's a real incentive to people to know what their donation will do for you, what it will buy you. I wanted to see this but I had to go looking for it.
Also, you know how some org's have a 'donation thermometer'-type graphic when they're trying to raise money for a specific thing - if you can set a target for something that you really need you could maybe use that - I reckon that motivates people to donate (or donate more) as well - a political organisation called 'GetUp' in Australia uses this a lot in its campaigns and it's been pretty successful with donations.
cheers and best wishes

I particularly like to see news of the Amboseli elephants posted, progress reports on calves and families etc. I'd also dearly love to know how Ely is doing, but suspect that he hasn't shown up for a while.

RSS

Looks like a very nice job, and the only thing I cant find easily is RSS links. Seems the website is built through a lot of RSS, but they are not easily found for a visitor who may want to paste the RSS into a google page or anything, generating content on some other place. In the meta tags I finally found one rss, but I think it would be handy to be able to get rss just from some links on the pages. Just an idea, thanks //dan

If you click on "Site map" at the top, you get a list of RSS feeds, I believe a complete one.
There are no RSS feeds for single articles, because there are not enough comments to make this worthwhile, but all the list pages, like each forum and blog, have RSS feed links at the bottom.
Great usability and design!

Great usability and design! One thing only: it would be easier to find this place, if the link on the left sidebar was titled 'Forums'.
Best,
Robert
Thanks, good hint

As to Forums, yes, you are right. This was a leftover, trying to solve an earlier usability problem. The underlying problem is that first-time users may have no clue where to look for something similar to a table of contents. Your comment made me change it.
As you can see, I have still added a hint to the Forums menu point because of that, but I hope this is less confusing. The menu point is now (2007-12-03) called, Forums main content, and as soon as a better idea comes along, it will be renamed again.
The objective is to tell the user that most content is in the forums and that this is one of the first places after the home page to look at for new users. The forums also have the advantage of having an automatic table of content, the list of forums. By the way, the menu entry has to fit into one line in the available themes (skins).
If you think that everybody can find out anyway by analyzing the choices or using the [help] button, many first time users don't do that. Many spend only seconds on the site to make up their mind whether they want to read more at all. Roughly 50% bounce off the home page (which isn't as bad as it first sounds).
