Elephant musicHello, I have been wondering for awhile now what would happen if you played an elephant greetings ceremony in the wild, to captive elephants in a zoo? The main reason I wanted to know this was to show people how intelligent and complex elephants really are. I thought if I could play them (captive elephants) a recording and they responded (in someway) then I could use this as proof to get people to understand that elephants are not useless beasts. I can't afford to get over to Africa or even India to record such a ceremony, is there any recordings availible I could use or any studies into elephant language I am missing? |

Thank you the websites have been really helpful and they are very interesting. I was thinking of doing a study into it, which I didn't really explain. But the website elephant voices has made me modify it a little. Incredible site thanks. I absolutely love Echo and her beautiful family...

There has been extensive work carried out on elephant vocal communication using recordings and playbacks. Can I suggest you refer to www.elephantvoices.org. Joyce Poole and Petter Granli are the experts on communication and many of your questions will be answered on their website.

Also, on Carol Buckley's Elephant Sanctuary site there is a video of elephants hearing their elephant friends talking on a recording for the first time in a long time.
Winky & Wanda meet Tina and Tarra electronically
A Detroit resident made a copy of the video on our EleCam site of Tina and Tarra talking and playing. She played the video for Winky and Wanda at the Detroit Zoo. As far as we know, this is the first time that Winky and Wanda had heard communications from Tina or Tarra. Winky and Wanda's incredible reaction was captured on video as well. Listen as Wanda (high pitched squeaks) talks back to Tarra as she chirps, barks, rumbles and trumpets. It is magical to listen to what sounds like a live conversation between the two. Obviously, Wanda found Tarra's vocalizations engaging, responding in a totally unguarded, playful manner.

I am a musician as well, and to me, this sounds similar to jazz! :)

Playback studies

This method has been used a lot recently in the wild, like playing back sounds of well-known, little-known, unknown elephants or even lions and studying the resulting behavior. The elephants hearing the sound react quite clearly and such that it is obvious that they very clearly distinguish between their friends and other elephants.
However, there are two caveats.
