Obama on November 5

On the morning of November 5th I got a text message from Soila in Amboseli telling me how happy the whole ATE team was that Obama was elected. Everyone in Kenya was hoping and praying that he would win, not only because he was a "son of Kenya" as people say here, but also because he seemed the right man to make the world a better and more peaceful place. Soila asked: "In honor of his election can we name a calf after him?" I said, of course, it's a great idea.

In the meantime, unbeknownst to us, Norah and Katito had gone out earlier that morning and by the most amazing coincidence they came upon a brand new baby in the OA family and it was a male. Only a few calves are born in November and to have one born in the OA family was just astounding. Not only that, but he was less than 24 hours old which means he was born on November 4th.

He is now called Obama.

I'm sure our President-to-be will be pleased to learn that there is yet another little Obama in Kenya. I can see him chuckle.

A wonderful coincidence and a fitting tribute. Are the OAs Odette's family?

The OA Family

Yes, that is Odette's family. It is a family of 25 members and Orlanda is the matriarch. The mother of Obama is Olwen, Orlanda's 25-year-old daughter. Olwen is an experienced mother with three other calves, all males, so Obama has three older brothers.
