Photo gallery for Did the long rains arrive late?![]() Did the long rains arrive late?Tue, 2009-04-28 16:44 · Forum/category:I talked to an elderly man [age set – Ilyangusi] maybe born around early 1920s asking if he had ever experienced prolonged drought before like now where the short and long rains have failed respectively. He recalled in 1964- the worst hit, whereby lots of livestock died and shockingly a number of people died too. The Maasai were moving day and night in search of greener pastures for their livestock as they are doing now. Whenever tiny drops of rain are realized in a certain area they all struggle to make it to the place. Many are the times I have come across them trying to lift cows that could no longer stand without any support, and it's just a sad scene to watch. So far some people have lost almost half of their livestock. Elephants are skinny and few inside the park as there is nothing much left to forage. Some zebras and wildebeests are dying, livestock [especially cows] are skinny and weak and one could count their ribs from a distant. For two weeks now it has been raining on patches around the park. The Maasai are covering their cows with plastic paper rapped on their backs and I was wondering what the idea was. After a little thought, is when I knew it was to shield them from rain drops just in case, because the cows are weak and that can lead to high chances of dying Ten days ago for the first time in many months it rained heavily in the park for about 2 hours, I was delighted to drive around and see how much water is in the park. There was much water on the sides of the road. At the Elephants Research Camp (ERC), we recorded 25mm of rain a few weeks ago and by surprise we recorded 40mm yesterday. Our wish is that it will rain enough to rehabilitate the whole park and the entire ecosystem. |
