A little rain![]() It rained in Amboseli yesterday, not much, only 2.4mm in the research camp, but there was much heavier rain to the east and south of the Park. This is good news because the animals will be able to feed in these areas once the grass starts coming up. We're hoping for more, but at least I can no longer say there hasn't been a drop of rain in Amboseli.

Hi Cynthia! Im a new fan of the all the hard work you and the organization goes through to relay information and conservation policies. This is a little off topic, but has there been any signs of elephant culling in the they area you are working at? I understand the drought has been a major issue. Im hoping best for all the elephants (and ither animals) in need!

Culling

Wikipedia explains the meaning of the word in relation to wildlife here. It means something like planned decimation. Did you mean that?
I am not aware of any elephant culling in Kenya. Quite to the contrary, the protection of elephants and other wildlife is official policy.
Culling.

Thank you Hans for the clarification. I'm new to the whole concept but I was trying to refer to illegal poaching for ivory or any issues that are related to the intentional killing of the elephants for profitable gain. I am trying to work on a research paper for an ethics class and was wondering if there was any such problems the area.
The Elephant Charter - towards a new ethic

Much is currently being written about a new ethic towards large-brained, highly-social, structurely-communicative, self-aware animals, such as great apes, cetaceans and elephants. Have a look at the website on the Elephant Charter that our colleagues at ElephantVoiceshave put together.
Wonderful

Dear Harvey, Thank you so much for adding this information to the blog. The Elephant Charter is so exciting. I'm hoping all people to make decisions about elephant welfare in any capacity will read the Charter and seriously consider its ideas.
Poaching

A good start could be to type the word poaching into the top right search box and click on the [Search] button. You can also try the words killing and killed.

Something is clearly wrong with the climate.
I live in Vancouver, one of the wettest places on the planet. It rained the entire month of November, without stopping.
And now, as I write, we're in the middle of a deep freeze, with blue skies, a stiff Arctic wind and sub-zero temperatures. Incredibly, it's been like this for eight days, with the end still nowhere in sight.
Climatologists clearly don't know what they're talking about: This is an El Nino year for the U.S. Pacific Northwest, which means damp and warmer-than-usual temperatures. The precise opposite, in other words, of what we're seeing now.
I pray for rain for the drought-stricken animals.
On a positive note, I will be in Amboseli soon — and in Vancouver, we often say, somewhat cynically perhaps, that the fricking rain follows Vancouverites wherever we go when we're trying to escape the perpetual damp. Perhaps I'll bring the rain with me. Let's hope.
Rain in December

We sometimes get Christmas rains so maybe you will bring them. We can only hope.

Wonderful, Cynthia. Keep doing your rain dance. Surely soon Amboseli will get many hours of rain in one day.
A new circle

Good to hear. I do hope more rain will follow and a new circle will commence.

I just watched a few nights ago Echo Queen of Elephants and this is all so amazing to me. It is snowing here right now in NY and very cold. I wish I could do more for these poor animals who cant even get something so simple as rain....its crazy to think how we can take something so simple as rain for granted.

Great news. Its unfair that some countries have so much rain whilst Amboseli has so little. Lets hope and pray that much more will come so that all the animals can survive.

Good news indeed! We have more rain than we could possibly want here in England at the moment. I keep wishing we could ship some of it down to you. I will keep praying for more for you.
