Sad news in the family...![]() There has been a tragedy for our ATE team here in Kenya. In the early hours of February 12, Katito (one of our three wonderful field researchers) and her husband Raymond Rumsey (a US citizen working in the development field) were attacked in their apartment in a Nairobi suburb called Kilaleshwa. They were beaten and stabbed. Raymond died from his wounds; Katito survived. The gang comprised four men and one woman. We don't know what the motivation was. We don't think it was purely theft, since they only took a bit of the money Katito offered them. We suspect it was an assassination. Who knows if the authorities will ever get to the bottom of it. One knife thrust penetrated Katito's lung, and she had to be hospitalized for six days. She is now fine physically and starting on the long road to coping with such a terrible expereince. The funeral was held on Saturday, the 20th, and Katito is now resting at her mother's house in Oloitokitok. Her three beautiful children are with her: Chaka, age 9; Nayanka, age 6; and Saire Nandi, age four months. We all wish her strength, courage and a speedy recovery.

Words fails me Katito, what can I say but to let you know my thoughts are with you and your family, I can't even begin to understand what you have experienced during the last few weeks, if the extended elephant family can do anything at all please do let us know,
For some reason it feels like I need to say "please don't give up" all you women of Amboseli Trust for Elephants; Cynthia, Soila, Katito & Norah, there is no need to give all the reasons for why that is, you know them all...
Saddening.

That's so sad! I am so sorry for Katito's loss. Can't believe that Saire Nadni the beautiful baby lost her dad.
Is there anything we can do to help? Maybe set an education fund for the children?
Take care!
