So sad news from Samburu![]() I don't have words to explain my sadness after what happened in Samburu, especially in the research camp of our friends of Save the Elephants. I was there on 13th february, everything was wonderful but since yesterday, everything has been destroyed. So, I wish all the best to Iain Douglas-Hamilton and his team to rebuild as soon as possible and to continue their great work... |

... is available from an article posted at the Conde Nast Daily informer, http://informer.truth.travel/2010/03/flash-flood-in-samburu.html, the BBC website, http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8549000/8549878.stm, and no doubt many more.
When I sent an sms to Iain asking what we could do to help, he came back, "Thank you for yr kind thoughts. It's Africa. Quite astonishingly powerful. We are washed out! I and O"
I heard about it

on the BBC World Service. All they said was that some damage was caused by the floods, not that everything had been destroyed. Hopefully the folks there will soon be sorted and back in action.

Informations missing

Hi Pete,
About the research center, I can tell you they have lost the majority of their things : "key research data, computers, equipment, kitchen facilities and food, lodging and personal effects have been washed away". They will need a big energy to rebuild the camp.
About lodges, some of them will take 2 or 3 months to restart.
Small animals like dik-dik and young gazelles has been found drowned. They think some lions cubs have died too. Elephants have left the place.
I can see BBC World Service has not given all informations !

750 m from the river

I just checked, because I remembered the camp as far from the river and on high ground. It is about 750 m—almost half a statute mile—from the river.
The flood must have been extreme, and I'm worrying about the river lodges as well, because they are down at the shore and must have been hit even harder. My plan is to be there in May with a group of friends.
