Cynthia -
SO much enjoyed our visit in Amboseli recently (my daughter/son-in-law/grandchildren, etc.). Remember, we were the Tropical Ice - non-mountain climbers??
Look forward to your newsletter, and hope we're on the list (magpiesbeads@yahoo.com for me). I am planning to do the naming project, and will get that going
very soon. Who knows! Maybe two babies!! To finish up my time in Africa at Amboseli was really special, and I thank you for your generosity with us....
Sending blessings and gratitude to you and all your people who champion the elephants,

Mag

Trip to Africa

Mon, 2010-08-23 19:34 by Shuger66

Hi Mag, I'm planning a trip to Africa and would like to visit Amboseli, do you have any suggestions you can pass along for places to visit? Especially spending tourism dollars that benefit this project? I will likely be travelling alone so I want to be very careful where I go and what I do.

Thanks!
Noella

Publications

Hi Cynthia,

Very good idea this e-newsletter. I got the first one yesterday. Very nice.
I have a question :

To learn more about biology and behaviour of elephants, you have given a list of publications in "Resources" section.
But the problem is that there is no link to be able to read those publications. Why ?
It could be so interesting to give access to those publications as they do in STE website.
To know elephants will give more chance to help them !

So please, can you give us the possibility to get publications and reports about elephants ?

Thank you so much.

We are working on providing publications...

Mon, 2010-08-16 08:32 by hcroze

Thanks for the comment, Pascal. We are working on providing publications on the website (as we have done in the past from time to time, like our report on Amboseli as a Biosphere Reserve or our CITES fact sheets), but are working to resolve a couple of issues. For one, we don't want to duplicate the excellent work STE is doing in providing us all with free and unfettered access to a huge body of scientific literature; I'm sure you know the STE publications portal. Plus, you can subscribe to the excellent STE Elephant News Service maintained by Melissa Groo.
But, that said, we would also like to make the large body of ATE scientific publications available directly from our site. Many of the peer-reviewed publications are copyrighted by the journals that publish them, so we are looking for a work-around, such as creating downloadable pdf files of the final manuscripts. Hopefully we can get them posted here over the next few months. We shall also be summarising the major findings of our landmark book that is coming out first thing next year (Moss, C.J., H. Croze & P.C. Lee (in press) The Amboseli Elephants: A Long-Term Perspective on a Long-Lived Mammal. University of Chicago Press). Watch this space!

Publications...

Thank you Harvey for your fast reply. It will be so great to be able to read some publications here in future. As I said, to me, it looks so important to understand elephant biology and behaviour. First, because I'm so interested about it, second, to be able to argue when somebody ask questions. I'm not a scientist but I do all my best to understand and to learn more and more about elephants, and you can imagine how it is sometimes difficult because I'm french (99 % of publications are in english !).
Yes, I have got so many publications from STE website and I receive newsletter from Melissa.

Now, we're looking forward to read the book you have mentionned : The Amboseli Elephants: A Long-Term Perspective on a Long-Lived Mammal. I'm sure it will be one of the best book about elephants.

I wish all is ok in Amboseli, and more you'll give us informations, more we'll enjoy !
Thank you for all what you do for elephants...

Pascal
