Update on Amboseli ElephantsHello. I am an avid animal lover. I became interested with the Elephants of Amboseli while watching a TV series on Animal Planet called "Echo and the elephants of Amboseli". Curious about this great big elephant I decided to search Echo online to see what she was up to. I was sad to learn that Echo had died a year and half earlier. Reading up on her death, I learned about the special that was done about her life called "Echo an unforgettable elephant". I watched it and became even more amazed and in love with Echo and the elephants. I still now watch the 16 episode series on Animal planet. The one big theme during this series is the drought which has been one of the worst in Amboseli. This is the main reason for my post. What is the current environmental state of Amboseli and how are the elephants coping?? Also an update on Enid after the death of Echo would be appreciated. Finally I would like to congratulate everyone at ATE or involved in the protection of these amazing animals, with people like you, they have a fighting chance. |
Update on Echo's Family

I am in Amboseli now and spent several hours with Echo's family, the EBs, the day before yesterday. I'm happy to report that they're doing very well. They were all together including Ella and her sub-group and Eudora and hers. There is even a new baby in the family. Echo's great granddaughter, Europa has had her first calf, a male. I've written more about Europa and her new calf in the newsletter I'm about to send out. Aside from this website, the e-newsletter is now the best way to get up-to-date information. Please go to the box in the left hand column here and sign up.
Enid was also there and I think she is finally back to something like normal. She is well-integrated in the family and still has her youngest calf Elise, who is almost 6 years old now, with her. I look forward to the time she has a new calf because I think that will be good for her.

So fantastic to hear about Europa's little son. I bet Elaine and Elana are being excellent allomothers for him.
Echo & Erin's lasting influence

Thank you for this update, so happy to hear they are doing well and are staying close to each other even if there are a couple of subgroups from time to time, I think many of us would have wished for nothing else.
As for the little EB baby boom, it must be wonderful to see them and maybe see some familiarities with their great grand mother and grand mother, grandmother & mother that were Echo and Erin respectively. I must say that both young first time mothers have done extremely well to carry them both through the 2009 drought. They will need to have all their resourcefulness and wits about them to keep these little bull calves in good health, but with Echo and Erin genes running through them I think they’ve got the chance of making it…
Update on Amboseli elephants

I wrote to this forum about six weeks ago and amongst other issues, I queried Enid, because I knew she was really close to her mother Echo and was deeply affected by Echo's death. Cynthia responded through the same forum to my post and said Enid is doing OK and coping, but felt she was still missing Echo.
You will find the information from Cynthia's response regarding Enid, under my heading EB Matriarch in the visitor forum - you will have to scroll down about five or six headings. I hope this gives you some reassurance about dear Enid.
Cheers
