The KBs were first seen in 1977, believed to have been displaced from the eastern side of the National Park due to increasing human development for farming. Over the years, the family grew and split into three families. The KB2s are the most frequently sighted and are likely to be featured in updates.

About The KB FAMILY
First sighted in 1977, the KBs are a small family that we believe was pushed out from the eastern side of the National Park as human development became very dominant for farming in this region. The KBs grew and split into three families over the years, predominantly driven to due to the deaths of matriarchs along the years, and due to some range shifts as elephants spread back across the ecosystem. The KB2s are the most sighted portions of the family, and likely the ones the updates will feature most.INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERS
The matriarchs of the three portions of the families are KB – Kalliope, KB2 – Kate, and KB3- Keiko. The KB and KB3s do not spend much time inside Amboseli National Park, while KB2 are homebodies who stay much closer to the central area, and are often found just south of our camp. Keiko is a feisty elephant, confident and bold, happy to be a bit of a loner, while Kate is a quiet, easygoing character whose family often socializes with adult males. Kalliope is somewhere between these two characters; she is confident but not antisocial, and is often spotted when there are big groups of elephants socializing – with her beautiful upsweeping tusks and scoop in her right ear, she’s easy to spot.
FAMILY STRUCTURE
With three family splits from the original KB family, each matriarch follows her own strategy of where the family goes at different times of the year. The KB2 portion led by Kate are the most resident in Amboseli National Park, whereas KB and KB3 are spend a lot of time in the larger Amboseli ecosystem home-range. The KB family have survived tremendous trials and tribulations, the loss of a matriarch can have profound changes in the family structures of elephants, and the KBs have displayed this over the years of knowing them. The first split in the family was as a direct result of losing their matriarch Kleo in 2001. For detailed information please read the KB family history.
